6th July 2026: service interruption.
(French version below / version française plus bas)
Hello everyone, the website has been interrupted for about a month. I'm deeply sorry about that and I wanted to clarify what happened.
Most people probably didn't notice since the secondary DNS server was still up and kicking, thus your domains were still being provided. In some sense, the service was still somewhat operational. However, the website was down.
So, what happened?
The server hosting netlib.re suffered a couple of power cuts. Disks are failing, harder than before. The server already was old and clunky, now it's almost ready for the landfill. I used this second-hand server with its original (already used) disks for 9 years now, I can't really say it wasn't expected.
The website was interrupted for about a month. Also, the mail server was on the same hardware, so I didn't see any of the (probably hundred) mails you sent me. Again, sorry about that.
About your data
I do have backups but for very good reasons (sarcasm) they were from a month prior the interruption. All in all, almost nothing was lost, there wasn't much changes in the database since registrations were closed a long time ago. However, your last zone modifications (after the 2nd of May) might not be here.
DNS servers provide the actual last modification you did on your zones (both DNS servers have the same data). The website however might not be up-to-date. In case you changed your zones after the 2nd of May, any modification will sync everything.
Why did this take a month?
I'm not monitoring the service and I use it sparingly. Took me a couple of days to notice when someone actually sent me an email on my personal mail address. After that, I had hope to get the server back and running when someone from my hosting staff was going to the datacenter, this took a few more days. Unfortunately this wasn't enough so the staff organized another round and a week later… the server was back! Well, for 5 whole hours I guess, before another power cut definitively crashed my system.
At this point, we were already 2 weeks in; I had no idea when or even if my server was going to be repaired so I decided to self-host it. I won't go in the details, but it took me a week to repurpose a laptop and start adapting the code for my operating system (OpenBSD). Another week later, the service is here!
What now?
As you might have guessed, your modifications after my last backup (the 2nd of May) are lost and even if the DNS servers are providing the up-to-date zone; so if you did change your zones after this date I encourage you to update your zones on the website to avoid future confusing errors.
Other than that, the service is pretty much back! I still have a few tests to perform, some tweaks here and there, but you should be able to use the service as before.
Please keep in mind that this project is a hobby and not a (paid) job. Thanks for your understanding, have a good day! |
